Trans Apennine

Wild backcountry adventure riding at its finest!
Our 6 days tour takes you on an exploration of the wildest and remotest part of the Tuscan Apennines and its famed Marble Mountains.
Expect every type of riding, from high exposed mountain passes, Alpine descents on never ending ridgelines to ancient mule trails and technical singletrack challenges in the valley. The climbs will be on double and single tracks including some hike-a-bike to get you to the most breathtaking locations.

The trip is a fully supported tour of the two mountain ranges in the Garfagnana in northern Tuscany. From our start and finish base camp our van will shuttle all your spare kit and equipment to the remote mountain Rifugios where you will be spending your nights, enabling you to focus on the actual riding and adventure.
The riding will be incredibly varied and requires a high level of fitness. Strong Alpine technical skills are a must as we will take you on trails of high exposure and technical descents.

Throughout the tour we will be taking advantage of the amazing Tuscan Rifugios that are spread across the mountains and provide us with accommodation and food. Rifugios are remote Italian mountain centers that act as sanctuary for hikers and bikers attempting tours across the mountain passes. Their bedrooms are usually typical hostel style shared rooms and the food is traditional Italian cuisine, always locally sourced and cooked, promising a great dinner experience after a full day of riding.

The Tour

Arrive by private airport shuttle to our main base camp in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, where you will spend the first night. We will be building bikes in our fully equipped workshop and getting you ready for the big tour. During your first amazing Tuscan dinner experience, we will provide you with a briefing about the schedule and clarify any questions before heading to bed.

↑ 1000m     ↓ 1900m      35km

An incredible introduction to the wild side of the Tuscan Apennines with breathtaking ridge runs, some challenging singletrack climbs with some of the best views the area has to offer. In the afternoon we take advantage of the gondola to get to the highest point on the tour, which in turn rewards you with an endless descent to the Rifugio where we will stay for the night.

↑ 800m     ↓ 1600m     26km

The wildest day of the tour by far. We take in the secret local trails deep in some of the remotest forests of the Tuscan Apennines linked to the backbone of the Apennine crest. Here we make our way to the south face of the mountain range where blisteringly fast open trails in the pine forests take us to our next Rifugio.

↑ 1200m     ↓ 2100m     28km

A true mix of Garfagnana riding along the high Alpine ancient trail routes linking the valley to the highest villages where the trail becomes more trodden, rocky and challenging. After lunch we spend the rest of the day descending and get our first taste of what the valley trails have to offer. The shuttle will bring us to the Rifugio.

↑ 1200m     ↓ 2300m     32km

The skyline day of the tour. A classic ride that keeps us high along the ridgeline of the Apennines with the imposing Apuane backdrop to the south. Expect incredible singletrack with open views and one of the longest descents to the cultural capital of the Garfagnana where a night of beer tasting and amazing local cuisine awaits you.

↑ 900m     ↓ 2100m     18km

The final day of the tour takes us into the ‘Grand Canyon’ of the Garfagnana. After traversing over the pass, we are rewarded with fast fun flowing singletrack to open the brakes and enjoy the views of the Mediterranean Sea. Finishing the tour in an ancient roman spa town, it couldn’t be a more perfect end to the adventure.

↑ 0m     ↓ 4000m     30km

For those still wanting more adrenaline, we have reserved the last day as a local shuttle day. Ride the rollercoaster tracks that have been carved into the mountains 20mins away from base all day long. Keep descending until your arms and legs cant take any more, or break off after lunch, where a refreshing jump into the pool and a last fantastic Tuscan dinner awaits you.

Our private shuttle van will take you back to the airport. The drive takes you directly through the centre of the two mountain ranges you have just conquered, hopefully reminding you of the incredible adventure you have just succeeded in.
